Newcastle United look set to submit a bid at the end of January for an exciting teenage midfielder who is also wanted by Borussia Dortmund.

Newcastle are keen on adding some depth to their midfield, but it may depend on if there are any outgoings in the next 11 days or so.

According to a new report from L’Equipe, Newcastle are set to rival Borussia Dortmund for the signature of Desire Doue who has been impressing at Rennes for the last two seasons.

Newcastle look for new midfielder in January

While a defensive midfielder looks to be top of Newcastle’s list of priorities this month, it’s certainly not out of the question that they would also be on the lookout for a more attacking player to help out with the front line.

Many times this season Newcastle have grown frustrated over the lack of creativity and drive from the midfield as none of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton or Sean Longstaff are particularly progressive in the final third.

They’ve really missed the directness of Joe Willock in the middle of the pitch, something that Doue could provide for the team given his speed and his confidence on the ball.

Dortmund are also keeping a close eye on the 18-year-old, however, and could provide some tough competition for Newcastle given the two team’s positions in their respective leagues and their European pedigree.

Newcastle will have to wait to see January budget

While it’s obvious that Newcastle admire Doue and the work he’s been doing over in France, it’s not clear just yet whether they would be able to afford the ‘exciting‘ teenage prospect.

A lot of Newcastle January transfer business depends on who is going the other way with Kieran Trippier linked to a move to Bayern Munich while Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles could also be heading out the door.

This is likely why Newcastle will be waiting until the end of the window to decide where to spend their money with other positions potentially taking priority.

However, there’s definite interest in Doue who Newcastle have been keen on since the summer and could be moved on from Rennes where he was very recently moved to their B team, opening the door for offers from other teams.
