Fabrizio Romano’s latest ‘here we go’ could potentially open the door for Newcastle United to make a transfer breakthrough of their own.

It has been a frustrating could of weeks in the transfer market for Newcastle United, with Paul Mitchell yet to make a real splash since arriving as sporting director.

Eddie Howe and Mitchell will be collaborating on Newcastle’s recruitment, but their relationship is yet to lead to any new additions.

That will disappoint the Toon boss, as Howe wanted a couple of signings before Newcastle’s trip to Japan. The Magpies are now in the Far East, but the squad has only been strengthened by the returns of Fabian Schar, Miguel Almiron and Martin Dubravka. They are back from their extended breaks, but are not joined by any new additions.

But Newcastle officials will be working hard in the background on transfers, and news coming out of AC Milan could potentially help Newcastle’s bid to sign Malick Thiaw from the Serie A giants.

Fabrizio Romano says AC Milan are set to sign a defender

Newcastle United are trying to sign Thiaw from AC Milan, who are also in the market for a centre-back.

And, according to Fabrizio Romano, they could be about to get their wish.

On Sunday night, the transfer expert provided an update on AC Milan’s pursuit of Red Bull Salzburg’s Strahinja Pavlovic.

Romano wrote on X: “Strahinja Pavlovic to AC Milan, here we go! Deal in place for Serbian centre back joining from Salzburg. Long term deal agreed days ago as he strongly wanted to join AC Milan. Package worth more than €18m, to be clarified soon.”

Door could now be open for Newcastle to sign Malick Thiaw

With Pavlovic on his way to the San Siro, that could give Newcastle United the opening they need to sign Malick Thiaw.

The 22-year-old is the Magpies’ top defensive target, with Newcastle in talks with Thiaw’s agent over a move to St James’ Park.

AC Milan want £35million for Thiaw, but Newcastle are looking to pay £10million less. Hopefully there will be a compromise, and that is surely much more likely if Milan already have his replacement through the door.

Milan News have even reported that the deal to sign Pavlovic could allow Thiaw to leave, but only if Newcastle show a willingness to increase their offer. They suggest that an offer ranging from £29.5million and £33.75million could be enough to do a deal.

Hopefully a deal is done, as Newcastle desperately need to make a breakthrough in the transfer market.

There has been a lack of progress since the PSR nightmare at St James’ Park. There has been more talk about a potential power struggle and Eddie Howe possibly leaving than there has been about new signings.

That needs to change this week, as the new Premier League season edges closer and closer.
