Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Sports Director, Roland Virkus told German publication, Sport1, “With Marcus Thuram we stretched. We have to accept that when it comes to even bigger clubs, where Marcus might go. The fact that players will leave us for free is not a positive situation and I can’t sugarcoat it”

Thuram will command big wages

The Magpies will face intense competition for Thuram from the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea after scoring 14 goals already this season.

His impressive displays for France in the World Cup won’t have hurt his value either which puts the striker in an excellent position to negotiate a high-paying contract with whichever clubs come forward for his signature when his contract expires in summer.

Newcastle’s Allan Saint-Maximin will no doubt be bending Eddie Howe’s ear again having heard the news as he’s made no secret of his desire to link-up with his fellow countryman.

It’s all about the project

Given the calibre of the competition also keeping tabs on Thuram, Newcastle will definitely have to go big if they want to be the ones to land the 25-year-old. The ability to offer Champions League football could be the deciding factor.

With Newcastle currently sitting outside of the top four, they may find themselves at a disadvantage on that front come the end of the season. Although, Chelsea may find themselves missing out on a Champions League place too, and that hasn’t stopped their impressive recruitment.

The key for Newcastle will be selling the project to Thuram. It was impressive enough to bring Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes on board, so it can work on Thuram too. Throw in the fact he could link up with his mate, Saint-Maximin and it doesn’t look as unrealistic as it first seemed.
