Despite boasting the meanest defence in the Premier League last season, it seems Newcastle United are looking to strengthen.

With both Sandro Tonali and Yankuba Minteh signed and Harvey Barnes reportedly set to follow, it’s been a busy few weeks.

Both Harry Maguire and Joachim Andersen have been linked with a move to Eddie Howe’s side as Newcastle prepare for the Champions League.

Tino Livramento is another Newcastle target, with the increased schedule next season set to take a toll on Howe’s squad.

Now, a new name has emerged.

Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, the club are interested in a move for Monaco and France defender Axel Disasi.

Newcastle expected to make contact with Monaco this week

Romano took to Twitter to share the latest on the story.

He claims Newcastle have already spoken to the defender’s agents about the prospect of a move to St James’ Park.

Now, they are prepared to speak to Monaco about a deal for the 25-year-old.

Manchester United have long been linked with Disasi and reportedly remain in the hunt for his signature having spoken to him, albeit they are yet to make an official approach.

Disasi fits the mould for Newcastle

When Newcastle have looked towards European football for signings, they have tended to focus on players in their early-to-mid-twenties.

At 25, Disasi has already amassed a huge amount of top level experience. Able to operate at both right-back and in central areas, he’s played 130 games in Ligue 1 as well as 14 times in the Europa League.

Having also broken into the French international squad, he was part of their run to the World Cup final.

Hailed as a “complete defender” by scouting outlet Ligue 1 Analysis, perhaps he could represent a cheaper option than the likes of Maguire or Andersen.
