In October, it was reported by the Chronicle that Newcastle had been scouting Lille striker Victor Osimhen.

Talk of the Nigerian arriving got a mixed response from Toon fans, but it seems like it won’t be happening anyway. Sky Sports have reported that Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham have all been watching him ahead of the January transfer window.

Osimhen is one of the top scorers in France, finding the net nine times so far in Ligue 1 – a tally only bettered by Moussa Dembele and Wissam Ben Yedder.

With Newcastle struggling in front of goal, it’s no surprise they’ve been scouting other forward options. Joelinton is yet to hit the heights, being overshadowed by the ageing Andy Carroll.

Osimhen is clearly going to be a star in the future, and would have been a real coup for the Magpies. But with three of the Premier League’s biggest clubs now circling, it looks like there’s no chance he’ll be wearing black and white anytime soon.

Yesterday it was reported that Newcastle were moving away from Jarrod Bowen because of Tottenham’s interesta decision that reeked of our incompetence in the transfer window under Mike Ashley.

But with three huge clubs chasing one of Europe’s hottest prospects, there’d be no shame in Newcastle turning their attentions elsewhere.

Liverpool are the best team in England, while Chelsea and Spurs have the lure of London and European football. What do Newcastle have? There’s no way we can compete.

It’s great to see we’re looking at impressive players, but on this occasion maybe he’s too good a player.
