Newcastle United have had a pretty uneventful January window so far but the club are already making preparations for their transfer activity in the summer.

There are a number of positions which Newcastle would like to improve on and which Eddie Howe has previously identified as key areas, though the money isn’t currently there to spend.

However, that may change in the summer and a new report from Inter Live suggests that one of their top priorities could be Inter Milan left-back Federico Dimarco as they prepare a bid of around £34m.

Newcastle reignite interest in former target

Heading into the summer of 2023 and Newcastle were also looking to find a new left-back for the upcoming season with Dan Burn potentially becoming more of a rotation option.

While they did actually sign one with Lewis Hall coming in on loan from Chelsea with an option to buy, the teenager has found it difficult to get a chance under Howe so far and Burn, for the most part, has kept his place.

When the 31-year-old was out injured, another summer signing in Tino Livramento stepped up to replace him and really impressed during his time in the team, though he has now dropped back to the bench.

Back in 2023, Dimarco had also been identified as possible target in that position and it looks like Newcastle are reigniting their interest in the Italian international in the coming months.

Newcastle need more stars with European pedigree

Newcastle’s transfer model for a lot of their recent signings has been to bring in hard workers who will fit Howe’s high intensity style of play, and while that should remain the same, they also need to be attracting top talent.

Hard work and determination can only get you so far and we’ve seen this season what can happen to those players when they’re either injured or fatigued from putting everything into last season.

At some point, if the club really want to reach the top then they have to be looking for those players who have Champions League experience, like Dimarco, and who know what it takes to be the best.

The difficult job Newcastle’s recruitment team will have is finding a healthy balance and not signing too many of those star players who come with more of an ego and creating an unhealthy atmosphere in what is a very unified dressing room at the minute.
