Newcastle United have moved to avoid disaster by offering Callum Wilson a new contract ahead of his current deal expiring next year.
Callum Wilson is now in the final year of his Newcastle United contract and while the 31-year-old now finds himself behind Alexander Isak in Eddie Howe‘s pecking order, he’s still an enormous part of the team.
That’s why, as reported by teamTALK, Newcastle have opened talks over a new deal for the former Bournemouth striker.
Wilson is part of Newcastle’s ‘leadership group’
Not only is Wilson invaluable on the pitch after scoring 18 goals last season and already having two in four appearances this term, Wilson is part of the ‘leadership group’ whose job it is to make Eddie Howe’s life easier when it comes to dealing with player issues.
Wilson said at the end of last season he wasn’t happy that he missed out on 20 goals and will be hoping to reach that landmark this season.

While Newcastle haven’t had the best of starts to the Premier League campaign, it’s hard to argue with Wilson’s impact. Coming off the bench in each of Newcastle’s four games this season, Wilson has found the net on two occasions.
Hopefully all goes well and Wilson stays for a few more years
That takes his tally to an impressive 40 goals in 86 outings for Newcastle in all competitions since he signed for £20million in 2020.

Despite being the wrong side of 30, Wilson still looks like he’s got plenty left in the tank, he’s forever causing defenders problems with his strength, pace and eye for goal.
Hopefully the contract negotiations go smoothly and Newcastle fans can keep seeing that handsome face in Newcastle gear for a few more years yet.
