Newcastle have scouted ‘quick’ £70m star, but now Man Utd are confident they’ll sign him

While Newcastle United are not planning to sign a striker this summer, Manchester United are, and they could buy a player who the Magpies have been scouting.

During Newcastle’s pre-season trip to America, Eddie Howe confirmed that the club would not sign a striker ahead of the new season. That means Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak will battle it out once again, while the versatile Anthony Gordon will likely provide additional cover in case of emergency.

Newcastle are instead focussing on defensive reinforcements, with Howe eager to sign a left-back and a centre-back before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August.

But while the Magpies focus on defensive additions, a Premier League rival in Man United could be on course to sign a forward who Toon scouts have had their eye on.

Manchester United looking to sign Rasmus Hojlund

According to the Guardian, Manchester United are confident about signing Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta this summer. The report states that personal terms have already been agreed with the ‘quick‘ 20-year-old.

It looks as if all Man United need to do is agree a price with the Serie A side, who are looking to receive around £70million for the Denmark international. That is a huge amount of money, and more than what the Red Devils are willing to pay.

But they are seemingly optimistic about the likelihood of Hojlund wearing a red shirt next season, as Erik ten Hag looks to add more firepower to his side.

It will be interesting to see how Hojlund does at Old Trafford if a deal is completed, as he is someone who has been on Newcastle’s radar over the past year.

Newcastle have targeted the youngster

This time last year, before Alexander Isak had arrived at St James’ Park, Hojlund was an attacking target for the Magpies.

Newcastle were watching the youngster, but did not formalise their interest as he swapped Sturm Graz for Atalanta.

But despite the move, Newcastle continued to keep an eye on Hojlund. It was reported by the Chronicle in February that head of recruitment Steve Nickson had scouts watching the striker ahead of a possible summer approach.

Now attacking reinforcements are off the table, and it could mean Newcastle miss out on the chance to get Hojlund as he edges closer to signing for Man United.
