The Times are reporting that Manchester United and England midfielder Jesse Lingard is Newcastle’s top January target.

They claim that Newcastle are willing to make Lingard the highest paid player in the club’s history.

The report says that Miguel Almiron is currently the top earner on £100,000-a-week but the offer Newcastle will make to Lingard is far higher than that.

A four-and-a-half year deal is also apparently on the table and Newcastle are willing to pay significant money for Lingard despite his contract being up in the summer.

Perhaps that contract situation plays a part in Newcastle’s stance on Lingard.

They would perhaps still not be paying United as much as he would be if he had a longer Old Trafford deal. That ‘saving’ might partially find its way into Lingard’s wage packet.

That means Newcastle are still not shelling out as much as they would ordinarily be and Lingard still gets a huge offer.

In any case, here is how the report went down with Newcastle fans on the day of their huge relegation scrap with Burnley.
