Newcastle are reportedly eyeing a January move for Hoffenheim star Florian Grillitsch.

The Sun have reported a move for the Austria international is on the Magpies’ radar ahead of the next transfer window.

Newcastle got their first win yesterday against Burnley.

The result has lifted the club off the bottom of the Premier League table, and there is optimism that Eddie Howe can now start to build.

Some tough games are coming up though, and there is certainly potential for struggle.

Thankfully the transfer window is not far away now, and Newcastle are going to be busy.

Apparently Grillistch is a possibility for Newcastle.

The star, 26, has been with his current club since 2017 when he transferred from Werder Bremen.

He has racked up 143 appearances so far, and scored eight goals and made 11 assists.

He has turned out 10 times so far in 2021/22, helping Hoffenheim up to fourth in the Bundesliga table.

According to a feature earlier this year from bundesliga.com, Grillitsch’s play style is similar tothat of legendary German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Hoffenheim’s sporting director Alexander Rosen said of the maestro: “Florian is an extremely gifted footballer. He has a real football brain and great technique, and can apply himself to a number of different roles.”

It is not the first time Newcastle have been linked with a move for Grillitsch. Sport Bild claimed in 2020 that the Magpies were keen along with Southampton and Arsenal.

The midfield lacks height, and 6ft 2in Grillitsch would bring some much-needed physicality and aerial combativeness.

Clearly, Grillitsch is a good technical player though as well. According to WhoScored data, he has a pass completion rate of 88% so far this term in the Bundesliga.

His contract with Hoffenheim expires next year, and so there is a chance they’ll be happy to let him go mid-season so as not to lose him on a free.
