Newcastle could now sign £51.7m ‘superstar’ this summer, they’ve already made contact

Newcastle United seem to be embroiled in another on-again off-again transfer story with Juventus star Federico Chiesa.

A few days ago it was claimed that Newcastle would be priced out of a move for Italian ‘superstar‘ Federico Chiesa, but now it seems that he might not be as expensive as first thought.

Now Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy (via Football Italia) has claimed that Juventus would listen to offers of around €60million (£51.7million) for Chiesa.

Liverpool and Newcastle could be set to battle for Chiesa’s signature

Aston Villa and Liverpool are also keen on the forward who got four goals and six assists in 33 appearances for Juventus last season, although it’s understood that Chiesa has no interest in joining Villa.

That leaves Liverpool and Newcastle to duke it out for the 25-year-old who has 41 caps for Italy, with Newcastle having informed Juventus of their interest.

Chiesa is under contract at Juventus until 2025 but after failing to qualify for the Champions League, they will be forced to sell some big name players this summer to fill that financial void.

It’s also the Champions League which could be Newcastle’s trump card in negotiations with the player. It’s thought that Chiesa is keen to play under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, but as The Reds only qualified for the Europa League after finishing fifth in the Premier League last season, Newcastle can offer Champions League football.

Another thing going in Newcastle’s favour is that Chiesa could link up with his Italy teammate Sandro Tonali who’s transfer is due to be announced any day now.

Chiesa would be an ideal signing for Newcastle for several reasons

In today’s money, £51million for a player who has over 40 caps for Italy is not a bad deal at all. Newcastle need another attacking forward and now having missed out on James Maddison, will be looking elsewhere. The thinking is that Dominik Szoboszlai is the priority, but there’s also a feeling he could prove to be too expensive.

Now that Newcastle know the price for Chiesa, they could switch priority. It wouldn’t be a bad move either. Tonali would be the only Italian in the Newcastle squad, so bringing in someone he’s familiar with could help him settle faster, not to mention the fact they’ve played together at international level so will have an understanding already.

As much as I’d love Dominik Szoboszlai at Newcastle, the Chiesa move makes more sense on paper. Of course I’d be happy with either, and I trust that Dan Ashworth and Eddie Howe know what they’re doing.
