Newcastle United had recently been linked with 22-year-old German international Felix Nmecha but could now be set lose out as he plans to stay in the Bundesliga.

Sport1 journalist, Patrick Berger, not to be confused with Patrik Berger who used to play for Liverpool, has now stated that he expects Felix Nmecha to turn down a move to the Premier League.

Newcastle and Manchester United were both keen on the young attacking midfielder and were reportedly willing to pay Wolfsburg‘s asking price of £21million to bring him to England.

Borussia Dortmund are in pole position to land Nmecha

The Sport1 journalist tweeted: Bor. Dortmund very confident to sign Felix Nmecha – with Newcastle and Man United in race too, as reported. BVB in pole pos., close to reach full agreement with 22yo German international. Wolfsburg demand fee of around €25m as they see themselves in comfortable situation.”

Nmecha had an impressive season with Wolfsburg scoring three goals and providing six assists in his 32 appearances for the German outfit.

The former Manchester City youth prospect received his first call up to the Germany senior side in March after representing Germany at Under 18 and Under 21 levels. He also represented England at Under 16, U18 and U19 levels.

Nmecha must now decide whether to try again in England or stay in Germany

Having a foot in both camps it will likely be a tough decision for Nmecha whether he stays in Germany or tries again in England, but at the moment it looks like he’s more likely to stay on the continent and move to Dortmund.

It’s not known how far up the priority list Nmecha was but my gut feeling is he wasn’t as high as some other players we’ve been linked with.

He seems more like one for the future than right now, and with that in mind, Newcastle could continue to monitor his progress at BVB and maybe try again further down the line.
