It has been a frantic start to the summer transfer window for Newcastle United, but now one of the club’s top targets could be on his way elsewhere.
Sandro Tonali is due to arrive at St James’ Park from AC Milan, and there is now speculation that he could be followed by Southampton’s Tino Livramento. However, talk of James Maddison also heading to Tyneside has gone cold.
He emerged as a target last summer, and has been linked ever since. Dan Ashworth had two bids rejected in 2022, but that has not put the Magpies off.
The 26-year-old has been one of Newcastle’s priority targets heading into the summer transfer window of 2023, but that no longer appears to be the case.
It was reported last week that Eddie Howe’s side had cooled their interest, which was good news for Tottenham Hotspur and their pursuit of the England international. Now Ange Postecoglu’s side could be about to end this long-winded transfer saga.

Tottenham looking to finalise James Maddison deal ahead of Newcastle
According to the Telegraph, Tottenham are hoping to agree a fee with Leicester for Maddison in the next few days. The report states that a formal offer from Spurs is ‘imminent’, with the North London club hoping to ‘thrash out’ a deal for the midfielder this week.
They add that while Newcastle are cooling their interest, Tottenham are pushing hard. And that means that Maddison could soon be wearing the white of Spurs rather than walking out to the Champions League anthem in a black and white Toon shirt.
Given how relentless the speculation surrounding Maddison to Newcastle has been, it is a surprise to see us suddenly distance ourselves from him. He is an exceptional player, and someone who Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth really like.

Maddison is someone who could really suit Howe’s team, and he has the qualities that the Toon boss is currently missing.
But it looks like Newcastle will turn their attentions elsewhere, which could be good news for fans who want to see Dominik Szoboszlai arrive.
However, unless there is a late twist, it looks very likely that Maddison is going to become a Tottenham Hotspur player in the very near future. And with that, Newcastle will have missed out on a key transfer target.
