The last player who Newcastle United signed on loan was Matt Targett in January 2022. He was so good that Toon officials decided to sign him permanently at the end of the deal.
Fast forward to the summer of 2023, and loan deals are once again an option for Eddie Howe as he looks to enhance his squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
Newcastle have spent nearly £100million on Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes, while there is talk of Tino Livramento being the next major arrival.
But the Magpies’ summer recruitment drive must not stop there. There are various other positions that Newcastle need to improve in, but that might be difficult given the limitations of financial fair play.
That is why journalists have spoke about Howe dipping into the loan market, and a potential bargain deal could be on offer if that is what the Toon owners decide to do.
Newcastle linked with Tyler Adams
Newcastle have been linked with signing Tyler Adams from Leeds United this summer.
He is a midfield target for the Magpies, having impressed during the 0-0 draw at St James’ Park last season. He is available for a reasonable fee too, with Adams boasting a relegation release clause worth £20million.
For that kind of money, he could prove to be a really astute addition to Howe’s squad.
However, a new report from Di Marzio has hinted that he could be available for even less – if Newcastle are happy to only take him for a year.
He has a very interesting loan clause in his contract
According to Di Marzio, Adams has a relegation loan clause in his contract. The clause states that Leeds will accept any loan offer they receive for Adams if the interested club agrees to pay his wages in full.
When the 24-year-old joined Leeds last summer, he signed a five-year deal worth £57,000-a-week.
That is the amount Newcastle would need to pay Adams to sign him on loan for the 2023/24 season.
That could be really appealing for the Magpies if they are keen to sign another centre midfielder towards the end of the transfer window.
But whether it is Newcastle or someone else, whoever gets Adams from Leeds could be getting a real bargain.
