Newcastle are reportedly interested in Reims striker Hugo Ekitike and Fabrizio Romano has offered an update on that pursuit.

The journalist has said that Newcastle’s opening bid has been turned down and that a deal is complicated, not least because Reims want a sell-on clause for the teenager.

90Min are reporting that Brentford and Brighton have also made bids for the hitman, but that Newcastle remain favourites.

West Ham are also interested, but their interest does not appear to be as far down the line as Newcastle’s.

Newcastle are apparently working on a deal worth around £30 million for the teenager, but Brighton and Brentford have put forward proposals worth more than £20 million.

West Ham only want him on an initial loan, which looks likely to put them on the back foot.

Ekitike is apparently keen on the prospect of moving to Newcastle and the Magpies apparently believe that they are close to coming to an agreement, despite the initial first knockback.

The French striker has 8 goals and three assists in Ligue 1 this season and that form has clearly caught the eye of top flight English clubs looking for someone to put the ball in the back of the net.

It has been something of a breakthrough season for him and it is seemingly one which could see him brought in to score the goals to get Newcastle clear of trouble.

Newcastle of course enjoyed success in the early part of the last decade with recruitment from France, but there were also some disappointing signings towards the end of that approach.

A more experienced hitman would likely be needed as well as the teenager if he came in, but the £30 million pricetag would raise expectations and pressure even further.
