Newcastle United are now said to be making an approach for Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans who is set to leave relegated Leicester City when his contract expires this month.

There are conflicting reports surrounding Newcastle‘s interest in Youri Tielemans with some outlets claiming Newcastle have no interest in the Belgian midfielder, and others claiming that he’s high on the list of targets.

The latest to add their voice to the story is Italian journalist Rudy Galetti who has tweeted that Newcastle will be approaching Tielemans with an offer.

Newcastle could now move for Youri Tielemans

The 26-year-old had a poor season with Leicester City which has put a lot of Newcastle fans off the idea of signing him, but previously Tielemans has been called ‘incredible‘ and ‘one of the best midfielders in Europe‘. It just never clicked for him during Leicester’s terrible season.

I can definitely see why there’d be trepidation from the Geordie faithful, but if he was to come to Newcastle on a free and Eddie Howe gets him back up to peak fitness and playing the way he wants, then he could turn out to be a massive part of our assault on the Premier League and Champions League next season.

If anyone can get Tielemans back to his best it’s Eddie Howe

Howe managed to turn struggling players like Joelinton and Miguel Almiron into world beaters. Tielemans already has the talent, he just needs a kick up the rear and Howe can deliver that. Getting him back to peak fitness and gaining his confidence back will see Tielemans back to his best.

On a free, I think Newcastle would be mad to pass up the opportunity to sign Tielemans. Even if it turns out that we can’t get him back to his best, we can still get a few million for him at the end of the season.

One thing of note here though, is that Rudy Galetti is a reporter based in Italy, and the outlets claiming Newcastle won’t move for Tielemans are English, so it’s more likely they have the better contacts and therefore the more truthful stories, so we’ll wait and see.
