Last summer Newcastle United looked close to signing then 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos from Benfica, he’d have cost just £35million but now he could cost twice as much.
Newcastle are once again looking at Goncalo Ramos as a potential striker option this summer, but will no doubt be kicking themselves for not pressing ahead with the £35million transfer last summer.
After a stunning season with Benfica, along with his headline-grabbing antics for Portugal at the World Cup, Ramos has seen his stock in the game, and therefore his price tag rise dramatically.
Newcastle are ready to ‘attack’ with an offer for Ramos
A report by Correio da Manha in Portugal (via Sport Witness) has credited Newcastle with a renewed interest in Ramos, claiming the Magpies are about to “attack” with an offer.
They do, however, say that he will not come cheap. Ramos has a £103million release clause, but it’s believed that Benfica would be willing to start negotiations closer to the £69million mark. There has also been an unnamed club who have made contact over £51million bid.

Even at £51million that’s a lot of money for Newcastle to be splashing around one one player this summer after already having done that for Sandro Tonali.
After missing out last year, let’s hope Newcastle are more serious this time
That being said, Goncalo Ramos looks like a perfect fit for Newcastle, he’s young, talented and already making a name for himself in the game. The 22-year-old bagged 27 goals and 12 assists in his 47 outings for Benfica in all competitions last season.

Not to mention his hat-trick plus assist in Portugal’s 6-1 demolition of Switzerland at the World Cup.
I really hope there’s truth in this one and Newcastle are ready and willing to bring Ramos to Tyneside this summer.
Granted when we looked like we were going to sign him last year we didn’t really know too much about him other than seeing him score against us in the pre-season friendly, and maybe that extra year in Portugal has helped him, but now we know what he can do, we should definitely bring him to Newcastle.
