Sky Sports in Germany have provided a positive update on Newcastle United’s pursuit of a central defender claiming that talks have taken place.

Newcastle could be about to beat Manchester United to the signing of centre-back Axel Disasi with reports claiming last week that Newcastle had agreed terms with the 25-year-old Monaco star.

Now Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany has issued an update on Twitter suggesting that talks have also taken place between Monaco and Newcastle for Disasi.

Newcastle have yet to make a concrete offer to Monaco despite talks

Plettenberg’s tweet suggests that Manchester United have yet to make an offer and would likely need to move on some deadwood, preferably Harry Maguire before they did so.

While he also suggests that concrete talks have taken place between Newcastle and Monaco it does also say that as yet no concrete offer has been made for Disasi. There’s a lot of talk of concrete but not much about actual transfers it seems.

Disasi would be the perfect Fabian Schar replacement

Disasi has been described as a ‘complete and dominant’ defender in the mould of Virgil Van Dijk, and given that that report was written a couple of years ago he was being compared to peak Van Dijk, not this imposter that’s been playing at Liverpool recently.

Newcastle are looking for someone to deputise and eventually take over Fabian Schar and with his talent and age, Disasi looks to be the perfect fit.

Disasi cost Monaco €13million (£11million) but Newcastle would do well to snap him up for less than £20million.
