Newcastle are now interested in signing ‘fantastic’ striker who’s already played with Sven Botman

Newcastle United’s need for a third striker has intensified in recent weeks, and now a former target appears to be back on Eddie Howe’s radar.

The Magpies currently only have one fit striker, with Callum Wilson starting Newcastle’s previous three games. The 31-year-old has had to play a lot of football, which is a big worry given how injury prone he has been over the years.

But Wilson is having to play due to Alexander Isak’s own fitness issues. After recovering from a groin injury, the Sweden international is out of action again. He did not look fit during a cameo against AC Milan, and he has now missed two games in a row.

Wilson and Isak’s injury woes have increased the need for Newcastle to invest in another forward, and that is why talk of a potential target is exciting.

Newcastle eye Jonathan David deal

According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle are going to rival AC Milan in the race to sign Jonathan David from Lille.

The report states that the Magpies are looking into a possible deal for the 23-year-old, whose contract at Lille expires in 2025.

David, who has been described as a ‘fantastic player’ by Micah Richards, would be an excellent signing for Newcastle, and it would also give us a bit of revenge over AC Milan after what happened in the Champions League last week.

Newcastle reignite interest in Sven Botman’s old teammate

The Canadian forward is enjoying a decent season in France, boasting seven goals in all competitions. However, he is yet to hit the heights of the previous campaign where he bagged 26 goals in all competitions.

A move to St James’ Park would see him reunited with Sven Botman, who joined Newcastle from Lille. The duo were part of the Lille team that won the Ligue 1 title in 2021, and Botman’s prominence on Tyneside could help convince David that Newcastle is the club for him.

He is not a new target for the Magpies. David has been linked with a move to the North East in the past, becoming a target shortly after the takeover in 2021.

The rumours continued last year, with Newcastle scouting David ahead of him competing at the World Cup for Canada.
