Newcastle United are looking to add to their defensive ranks to support Sven Botman after targeting an experienced title winner in January.
Beyond the starting options of Fabian Schar and Botman, Newcastle don’t really have much quality in depth if either of those picks up an injury.
A new report from Calcio Mercato now suggests that Newcastle are in the running for Lazio centre-back Alessio Romagnoli who only recently won Serie A with AC Milan 18 months ago.
Newcastle want support for Botman
Although Schar made the move across when Botman picked up his knee injury which kept him out of the side for three months, Newcastle don’t have another left-sided centre-back which can be so important in the Premier League.
Newcastle have already seen what can happen if you don’t prepare for the worst by making sure your squad has enough quality in depth, so that will be a huge consideration in the summer.
Whether or not they will be able to convince Romagnoli, who has enjoyed a ‘dominant‘ first season in Rome, is another matter but they are definitely big admirers.
The 29-year-old has a contract lasting until 2027 so there is no real urgency for the Italians to sell, but if Romagnoli wants to make the step over to England where he has a number of suitors he could force a move through.

Newcastle’s interest in Serie A players is growing
Having signed Sandro Tonali in the summer, Newcastle were often told how difficult the Premier League can be for Serie A players making the move over, but Tonali started off with a bang after netting in his first game against Aston Villa.
Newcastle are very clearly interested in the Italian market with a number of their recent transfer targets plying their trade over in Europe.
Newcastle have recently shown interest in the likes of Joshua Zirkzee, Matias Soule, Ederson and Paulo Dybala among others, all of whom are excelling in Italy.
The recruitment team at Newcastle have evidently found something about the league they appreciate and think will translate over well, and Eddie Howe will be hoping they’re right.
