Newcastle are more likely to sign 27-year-old ‘leader’ than £50m PL player

Crystal Palace have one of the Premier League’s strongest centre-back partnerships right now, and Newcastle United could be looking to break it up.

Eddie Howe is now searching for defensive reinforcements, with Tino Livramento linked with a move to Tyneside from Southampton.

But the Magpies are also looking to sign a centre-back, with the Toon recruitment team keen to bring in someone who can provide cover and compete with Fabian Schar. The Switzerland international is 31-years-old, and will likely be replaced in the next couple of years.

Two options Newcastle have been linked with signing come from the Premier League. The first is Joachim Andersen, and the second is his Crystal Palace teammate Marc Guehi.

The latter would be probably be a better signing in the long run, but a new report explains that it is actually the former who is more likely to arrive at St James’ Park.

Joachim Andersen more likely to join Newcastle

According to 90min, Palace value Guehi at £50million. In contrast, the report adds that Andersen is likely to command a fee of less than £30million. Therefore, 90min state that Newcastle are more likely to make a move for the 27-year-old than the England international.

With the finances involved, it makes sense that the Magpies would prioritise a move for Andersen over Guehi. While the latter has a higher ceiling, Newcastle have more positions they want to improve this summer and therefore need to get the most out of their transfer budget.

Andersen could be a smart addition, and looks like an ideal competitor for Schar. They are similar in style, with both players boasting a glorious passing range that can be used as an attacking weapon.

The Denmark international has also been described as a ‘leader‘, which should mean he is the right type of character to fit in with the rest of Howe’s squad.

But while Andersen is more likely than Guehi, that does not necessarily mean a deal will happen. As we have seen with Livramento, a Toon transfer can come completely out of the blue nowadays.
