Newcastle United are going head-to-head with Real Madrid in the battle to sign Marcos Leonardo in January, which just shows how far the club has come.

The Magpies and the world’s elite are looking at the same calibre of player, with both clubs keen to snap up one of Brazil’s emerging stars.

Eddie Howe is looking for attacking reinforcements right now and Marcos Leonardo appears to fit the bill. He is 20-years-old but has already scored more than 50 goals for Santos, while he looks destined to become a full Brazil international.

Newcastle have been keen to tap into the South American market for a while now as they look to give Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton another Brazilian buddy, but have so far failed to do so.

However, it has been reported that the Magpies are currently the favourites to sign Leonardo, and now the club are well aware of how much the young forward is going to cost.

Newcastle poised as Santos promise to sell Marcos Leonardo

According to Goal in Brazil, Santos have promised Leonardo that they will sell him during the January transfer window.

That is good news for Newcastle, who have been told exactly how much they need to pay to sign the striker.

Goal add that Santos received an offer from Roma in the summer worth around £16million including add-ons, and that kind of money will be enough to get Leonardo in the new year.

Newcastle and Real Madrid know this, as Goal state that the two clubs have been directly informed of Leonardo’s price tag by his representatives.

Santos only rejected Roma’s offer because they did not want to sell Leonardo in the summer, but things are different now. He is going to leave in January, and Newcastle have the chance to strike.

It will be a huge achievement if we can sign him ahead of Real Madrid, who could be impossible for Leonardo to turn down.

That is why it is imperative that the Magpies move swiftly, as he looks like the ideal candidate to provide more competition for Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson before eventually taking the latter’s place.
