Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool future could decide Alexander Isak saga as Newcastle United face ‘new uncertainty’

Alexander Isak now looks set to stay at Newcastle United, but what happens beyond this summer could rest on what happens with Mohamed Salah at Liverpool.

Liverpool made an approach for Isak but Newcastle United have constantly stressed that the striker simply isn’t for sale.

Isak is happy at Newcastle and still has three years left on his contract. This summer at least, there is no immediate pressure to sell the player.

Instead, Liverpool are trying to sign Hugo Ekitike. Indeed, Newcastle also made a play for the Eintracht Frankfurt forward and are thought to have agreed personal terms, but they could not agree a fee with the German club.

Liverpool will drop their interest in Isak if they sign Ekitike, which is a huge boost. Still, the situation may not always stay the same.

Alexander Isak could replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

According to Miguel Delaney of The Independent, Liverpool may miss out on Isak this summer. However, and while Newcastle might console themselves with that fact, the Reds look unlikely to move on entirely.

Delaney adds that the eventual departure of Salah from Anfield could see Liverpool move for Isak again. In April, the Egyptian star signed a new two-year deal on Merseyside.

The journalist also suggests that there is “new uncertainty” for Newcastle right now.

Writing in his Reading The Game newsletter, Delaney said: “Newcastle United wanted Ekitike to play alongside him [Isak], both to give them what would have been a frightening attack, and also to show Isak their ambition.

“That’s all the more important given Liverpool have shown their interest in the Swede. They may not get him now, and Newcastle might console themselves with keeping him… but the wonder is how long all of that will stay the case.

“The eventual departure of Mohamed Salah might end up aligning with an Isak move. There’s a lot of intrigue, and suddenly a new uncertainty for Newcastle.”

When Alexander Isak will leave Newcastle United – and to where

Isak could leave Newcastle in 2026, when he will have two years left on his contract unless he signs a new deal this summer.

Ideally, the club would be able to sign his long-term heir this summer. Ekitike could well have been that, playing alongside the Sweden international for a year before Isak is eventually sold.

That would make sense and perhaps Newcastle can still sign a player of similar profile to Ekitike during what’s left of the summer transfer window to enact that potential plan.

In terms of eventual destination, Newcastle would prefer to sell Isak to a foreign club when the time comes for him to leave.
