Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival at Chelsea could have a big impact on Newcastle United this summer.

The Argentine is set to be appointed at Stamford Bridge as the Blues prepare for a major overhaul after a nightmare season.

Pochettino’s task will be to get Chelsea competing with Newcastle towards the top of the Premier League. Still, the former Tottenham boss could have an even more telling impact on the lay of the land at St James’ Park.

Indeed, the Magpies have been linked with the likes of Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount. How Pochettino sees the pair will obviously be vital to Newcastle’s chances of signing them.

Pochettino to ask Chelsea to start contract talks with Mount

On Mount in particular, the Evening Standard have some fresh information.

They claim Pochettino will ask Chelsea to restart contract talks with the England star in an effort to keep him at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle are keen to move for the 24-year-old, who is reportedly valued at around £70m.

If they cannot reach an agreement with Mount, Chelsea will be forced into a sale given he is out of contract next summer.

Hard to see Newcastle spending that kind of money yet

Mount has proven a palpable goal threat in the Premier League over the years and still has plenty of room to develop.

Still, it’s hard to see Newcastle actually being willing to pay him the wages he’s chasing.

Thought to be eager to move alongside Chelsea’s top earners, that does not fit in with the policy PIF have so far adopted.

The Daily Mail have already claimed Newcastle are unlikely to smash their wage policy just yet, so quite why Mount would leave Chelsea for St James’ Park without a huge pay rise is unclear.
