Newcastle transfers: Mason Mount price tag emerges after contact

If there’s one thing Newcastle United have proven they won’t do, it’s overpay for players.

While the takeover brought with it big new funds, the club simply haven’t been able held to ransom.

Indeed, Newcastle are thought to have walked away from deals for the likes of Jesse Lingard as they refuse to pay more than what they believe a player is worth.

So far, that strategy has worked. The players Eddie Howe has brought in have largely hit the ground running, fostering a wonderful team ethos to have taken the club so far already.

Now, it seems they would be prepared to walk away once more.

Mason Mount’s price tag deemed too expensive

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has consistently been linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Out of contract in 2024, the 24-year-old is yet to agree a new deal at Stamford Bridge and has also been touted as a potential target for Liverpool.

His price tag, however, may prove prohibitive.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle and Liverpool have “checked” on the England international’s situation.

Still, the fact Chelsea could reportedly ask for as much as £70m could keep him in west London.

That is surely too rich for Newcastle’s blood

While Mount would an excellent addition for any team, that price tag is absolutely huge.

For a player coming toward the end of his contract who hasn’t exactly set the world alight this season, £70m seems an exorbitant fee.

Little about Newcastle’s conduct in the transfer market so far would suggest they are willing to go down such a route.

There can be little doubt about Mount’s ability. A key player under Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Gareth Southgate over the years, he has plenty of room in which to grow and has already proven a palpable goal threat at Premier League level.

£70m, however, does not seem like value for money given his contractual status.
