Newcastle United are interested in Matheus Cunha, but they are not the favourites to secure his signature.
The Wolves attacker is set to be on the move this summer, with various Premier League clubs queueing up to activate his £62.5million release clause.
One of those clubs is Newcastle United, with the 25-year-old recently named as one of the Magpies’ top targets. Newcastle are interested in Cunha, as Paul Mitchell prepares to strengthen Eddie Howe’s squad when the transfer window opens.
The Brazilian would be an exciting arrival at St James’ Park, and the club are positioning themselves to try and make him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever.

Newcastle United’s first move to sign Matheus Cunha
With interest mounting in Cunha, Newcastle United have made their first move behind the scenes.
According to TalkSPORT, Newcastle United officials have made contact with Cunha’s representatives about swapping Molineux for St James’ Park.
A move to Tyneside would see Cunha play alongside fellow Brazilians Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, while it could also give him the opportunity to compete in the Champions League.
Who Matheus Cunha wants to join this summer
However, those factors do not make Newcastle United Cunha’s most desired destination. Instead, he has eyes on another suitor.
TalkSPORT add that Cunha’s preference is to join Manchester United this summer.
Man United have spoken to Cunha about a move, and they now appear to be the favourites to land the 16-goal star.
That is a shame for Newcastle United, as Cunha is an extremely talented player who would massively enhance Eddie Howe’s attacking options.
However, it will not be the biggest blow if the Magpies miss out. While he is an outstanding player, it is not clear where Cunha would fit in at Newcastle United.
Signing a centre-back is Newcastle’s priority, as well as bringing in a right winger. Cunha would not fill either of those positions, so perhaps splashing out more than £60million on him would be unwise.
