Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell has a big job to do in the transfer market.
The need for new signings is set to be heightened in the coming days as Newcastle prepares to sell Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United.
Almiron has been tipped with a move away from Tyneside for the past year after struggling to perform in Eddie Howe’s starting XI. Paul Mitchell is now ready to let the 30-year-old go with Newcastle set to take around £10million from the sale.
Manchester City winger James McAtee is a Newcastle target. The winger has failed to play regular first-team football under Pep Guardiola this season, and McAtee has grown restless because of it.
Guardiola admitted McAtee should be playing more minutes given his quality. McAtee scored a hat-trick against Salford in the FA Cup which caught the eye of a Newcastle club legend. Alan Shearer called McAtee “excellent” after the performance.
However, reports suggest Guardiola has gone against his words on McAtee. A boost to Newcastle’s hopes of signing him.

Manchester City listening to McAtee offers amid Newcastle interest
Despite interest from Newcastle, it looks like McAtee will be heading elsewhere should he leave in January. The 22-year-old has interest all over Europe from the likes of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.
According to CaughtOffside, Man City are now listening to offers for McAtee with a view of making a move happen in January.
The report suggests that the club are aiming to make around £25m for the player. There is a lot of domestic interest in the winger too. Fulham looked set to beat Newcastle to McAtee while the latest report suggests that West Ham are also keeping tabs on him.
McAtee has made 12 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring four goals across 460 minutes of football. One of his goals came in the Champions League during a 4-0 win against Slovan Bratislava.
The Englishman was a late substitute as Man City fell to a late draw against Brentford on Tuesday.
Newcastle need a new right-winger
With Almiron set to depart, it leaves just Jacob Murphy as the only right-sided attacking option at Howe’s disposal. Harvey Barnes is currently out injured, and he’ll be reluctant to move Anthony Gordon from the left wing given how well he has played in recent weeks.
Howe has prioritised signing a right-winger in January – selling Almiron could be an accelerant to getting that done.
It feels like Newcastle’s squad is a big injury away from collapse. Mitchell needs to work his magic on the transfer market to ensure Howe has what he needs to keep the good run going.
The Magpies have been linked with a move for Brentford man Bryan Mbeumo and PSV Eindhoven star Johan Bakayoko, but the feeling is that it will be difficult to get those moves done in January.
