Newcastle United need a big January transfer window, but that does not necessarily mean they will get one.
Given the fact that the Magpies have suffered so many injuries and are now majorly struggling on the pitch, it is clear that Eddie Howe needs some support from the owners.
Newcastle need reinforcements, otherwise this could prove to be a rather underwhelming season. It is feeling that way at the moment, with Champions League and Carabao Cup exits followed by a rotten run in the Premier League.
The Magpies need a lift, which fans are hoping will come in the form of new signings. Cover in centre midfield appears to be a priority, with Kalvin Phillips heavily linked with a loan move to St James’ Park. Fans would also love to see an attacker arrive this month, with Miguel Almiron massively struggling on the right of attack.
In a dream scenario, Newcastle will make some major signings this month and rediscover their form and finish the season strongly. And while the latter might happen, it might not be because of the former according to the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

Luke Edwards sends January transfer window warning to Newcastle fans
The Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has taken to his official X account to provide Newcastle fans with an update about the January transfer window, and it is certainly not promising.
He wrote: “I think #nufc fans need to be prepared for fact there isn’t going to be a lot transfer action this month. I wouldn’t be surprised if they only do a loan. FFP a very real issue. It’s early in the window though. At same stage last year they weren’t planning to sign Gordon….”
Newcastle acting with a lot of caution despite the need for new signings
It is a very negative update from Edwards, who appears to be calling on Toon fans to lower their expectations during what could be a quiet January transfer window.
Hope of a big money arrival appears to be fanciful, although that was also the case this time last year – then Anthony Gordon arrived.
But it appears that loans are going to be as good as it gets for Newcastle, with financial fair play proving to be a real issue. That will infuriate Toon fans, many of whom are struggling to fathom why the wealthy owners are being prevented from splashing the cash.
Amanda Staveley and co are acting with caution, as they know whatever they spend now will impact what they can spend in the summer, which is when there is better value in the market. Newcastle’s future spending will also be hindered by the club’s early exit from Europe, while the fact that we currently look incredibly unlikely to qualify for the Champions League again further dents our financial aspirations.
Another issue that Newcastle have is that they will soon have key players back from injury. The likes of Joe Willock and Harvey Barnes will hopefully return in the coming weeks, which negates the need for fresh faces in the middle of the park or out wide.
