Liverpool make move to sign ‘phenomenal’ midfielder ahead of Newcastle

Manu Kone is a long term target for Newcastle United, but the Magpies could be about to miss out to Liverpool.

While Newcastle are looking for midfield reinforcements this summer, Liverpool‘s need is much greater. They need a midfield rebuild, and have been forced to go back to the drawing board as they prepare to miss out on Jude Bellingham.

That could lead to Jurgen Klopp’s side trying to sign another player from the Bundesliga – Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone.

Liverpool make first move for Manu Kone

According to Get French Football News, Liverpool have made initial contact with Kone about a summer move to Anfield. They add that the 22-year-old is set to change clubs during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Kone has a lot of Premier League eyes on him, with Manchester United also interested in the Frenchman. He is also someone who has been on Newcastle’s radar for a long time.

The Magpies were reportedly willing to pay £30million for Kone last year, while he was still being scouted by Newcastle at the start of the year.

Rumours have persisted heading into the summer transfer window, but now Liverpool may have forced Eddie Howe’s hand. They have made their first move to sign the ‘phenomenal‘ midfielder, which means that Newcastle might have to act fast.

Pressure on Newcastle to make a decision

If the Toon recruitment team believe that Kone is the right type of midfielder for the club then they need to make a move quick and challenge Liverpool for his signature. However, it all depends on how high Kone features on Newcastle’s list of targets.

It would certainly be interesting to see who Kone picked if it was a straight choice between Newcastle and Liverpool. It would be the first real test to see how much our new status of being a Champions League club changes things.

But with Liverpool more in need of a midfield rebuild, it would be no surprise to see them press ahead with a deal for a player as talented as Kone. He has the potential to be a special player – which Newcastle will know all too well. That is why he has been on the Magpies’ radar since last year.
