Newcastle United defender Sven Botman is seemingly no longer of transfer interest to Liverpool.
Botman has been an excellent player for Newcastle United when fit but the sheer number of games he’s missed through injury simply cannot be ignored.
In total, the defender has missed 68 games since joining the club from Lille in the summer of 2022.
During his 91 appearances for the club, the Dutchman has often looked like one of the best defenders in the Premier League, which adds to the frustration.
Will Newcastle United ever see the best of Sven Botman again or would you sell him?
It was not particularly surprising, then, that Liverpool were linked with a move for Botman.
Not only is he an excellent defender on his day, Botman and Alexander Isak were close friends during their time at Newcastle together.
Isak, of course, left the Magpies to join Liverpool in bitter fashion back in September.
Still, it seems Botman won’t be following him there after all.
Liverpool decide against Sven Botman move due to injury issues
Indeed, according to The Chronicle, Liverpool have dropped their level of interest in the 25-year-old due to his injury issues.
In all honesty, that is a reasonably predictable outcome. Botman has just struggled to stay fit for so long that it’s natural there would be doubts about him.
For his part, the player is said to know that he’s approaching a crucial juncture in his career. Almost 26, he has never been capped by the Netherlands at senior level.
What that means for his future at club level, however, remains to be seen.
If you could sign ONE Premier League player this month – who would it be?
Newcastle United have confirmed they are trying to keep Sven Botman
The defender is out of contract in the summer of 2027, so extending his deal has to be seen as a priority.
Even if Botman doesn’t get back to his very best, the club still need to protect their asset.
Fortunately, Newcastle have confirmed they are holding contract talks with Botman.
In early December 2025, sporting director Ross Wilson said: “Those discussions are ongoing. Some discussions are more difficult than others, but the desire would be to keep those players [Botman and Tino Livramento].”

Clearly, they still need to come to an agreement on that front and there’s no absolute guarantee of that.
Still, even with the injury issues in mind, ensuring Newcastle are protected from losing Botman either on a free or at a knockdown price feels wise.
