Lille have ended Newcastle’s hopes of signing Sven Botman during the January transfer window.

The Magpies have chased Botman throughout the month so far, as they look to bolster their backline for the relegation battle.

But Lille president Olivier Letang has stated in no uncertain terms that Botman will be remaining with the Ligue 1 club until the end of the season.

“Sven Botman will stay here until the end of the season,” he said.

“He’s not going to leave the club – he’s key player to help us achieve our goals.

AC Milan have also been linked with the young Dutchman, but the saga looks to be over for the winter window. Newcastle now need to look elsewhere.

Diego Carlos has also been linked and he is a seasoned defender with European experience. That bid may now ramp up in light of this news.

A lack of Premier League experience would be a concern, but he can do the business at Europa League and Champions League level.

It is important that Newcastle get somebody over the line as quickly as possible, although of course they have to be of the right quality and mentality to help the team progress.
