Reported Newcastle United target Joe Gomez came in for praise from Lee Dixon during Liverpool’s FA Cup game with Nottingham Forest yesterday.

The defender came into the starting XI at right-back in place of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Gomez may well have come in to replace Alexander-Arnold for the game anyway, with Jurgen Klopp rotating in a number of fringe players for the clash.

It was only Gomez’s 15th appearance of the campaign so far.

He has found minutes difficult to come by this term. He is effectively fourth-choice right now at Anfield behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate.

His lack of game time has led to reports that he could be on the move this summer.

And Newcastle have been named as possible suitors.

During yesterday’s game between Liverpool and Forest, co-commentator Dixon spoke highly of Gomez.

He said just before half-time: “He’s a good player. A good defender, Gomez. Obviously he’s had huge injury problems. He did ever so well with England when he was playing. I thought he was an exceptional talent.

“He’s just been halted a little bit with his injury issues. It will take him a while to just get his place back.”

Joe Gomez could be a great addition for Newcastle and have a new lease of life at St. James’ Park

Gomez is indeed a good defender, as Dixon said yesterday.

It is just unfortunate that he has had the injury problems he’s had.

He’s definitely a big talent, and has some very good attributes that would improve Newcastle at the back. His pace being one of the best.

There was a report earlier this week claiming Liverpool value Gomez at £23 million.

That’s not bad at all given the level he has shown for the Reds when he’s been fit.
