No club has been in the news more than Newcastle during the international break.
Plenty of transfer targets have been mooted and now a report from the German media claimed Filip Kostic of Eintracht Frankfurt is among them.
Where has the rumour come from?
The report has come from German tabloid Bild, who claim that Newcastle’s new owners are targeting the Bundesliga.
Until Newcastle appoint a new manager and director of football, all transfer links are likely just speculation.
The Athletic have also reported that every major decision will have to go back to Saudi, which slows the process too, and we are still months out from the transfer window.
How good is Kostic?
Kostic is a Serbian international winger with 42 caps to his name.
He has been in decent form at Frankfurt this season, notching up four assists and two goals in all competitions.
At 28, Kostic is in or approaching his prime and potentially open to one final big move in his career.
His contract apparently expires in June 2023, which combined with his age should mean his asking price is not astronomical.
Where would Kostic fit into Newcastle’s plans?
A bit of creativity would not go amiss to kickstart the new era.
Plenty depends on who the manager is by January and which formation Newcastle are playing.
There is no point buying him if he would be a square peg in a round hole; for example if Newcastle were planning to play a system without widemen as they have done for much of the season.
It is worth repeating that it will be far easier to judge the suitability of transfer targets once the manager, sporting director, formation and style of play are known.
