Newcastle United were linked with signing Moises Caicedo during the January transfer window, and Ben Jacobs believes he is one to watch for the Magpies this summer.

Caicedo was a man in demand at the start of 2023, with plenty of teams trying to sign the Brighton midfielder. Newcastle were one of them, as Eddie Howe looked to boost his central options amid an injury to Jonjo Shelvey.

It was reported by the Telegraph that Caicedo and Youri Tielemans were both on the Magpies’ list of targets, but a deal for the former was seen to be a long short.

That proved to be the case, with Arsenal and Chelsea coming closest to signing the Ecuador international. They both had big money bids rejected for Caicedo. Chelsea proposed £55million while Arsenal offered £65million.

But Brighton stood firm, ignored Caicedo’s plea to go and kept him at the Amex Stadium. Now it is March and he has signed a new contract with the Seagulls until 2027.

However, Jacobs does not believe the new deal will end talk of a move away.

Ben Jacobs provides Moises Caicedo to Newcastle update

Jacobs has spoke to Caught Offside about Caicedo’s future, and believes he will still be the subject of interest from Premier League clubs. And he has provided an interesting detail about his new contract.

“There is no release clause in the new deal, but that doesn’t mean Caicedo won’t be sold this summer,” he told Caught Offside.

“The contract extension just helps protect his value. Brighton did the same with Alexis Mac Allister prior to the World Cup and will be glad they did given the incredible tournament he had for Argentina.”

Jacobs discussed the possibility of him joining Arsenal or Chelsea before adding: “With Caicedo, keep an eye on Newcastle as well. Liverpool would need the price to drop from January to seriously consider entering the race. They have tracked Caicedo since his time at Independiente del Valle and now the agent situation is less complicated, they can’t be entirely discounted.”

Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth are big fans of Caicedo

It would not be a surprise if Newcastle reignite their interest in Caicedo. The Magpies still need a centre-midfielder after failing to sign one in January, and it has been reported that one is on Newcastle’s summer wishlist already.

He is a player who Toon sporting director Dan Ashworth knows well, as he was the man to bring Caicedo to the Premier League in the first place.

And Eddie Howe is a big fan too. The Athletic reported during January that the Newcastle manager believes Caicedo is the perfect fit to play the number six role in his side.

With all those factors in mind, it is no surprise that Jacobs believes Newcastle are one to watch in the race to sign Caicedo this summer.
