Newcastle United’s owners PIF reportedly want to bring Neymar to St James’ Park this summer – which Jose Enrique believes would be a ‘massive mistake’.

With Newcastle closing in on Champions League qualification, it has been claimed that PIF would like to sign a marquee player ahead of next season. And one option appears to be Neymar.

It has been reported that Newcastle’s owners are interested in the Brazilian winger, who looks set to be on the way out of Paris Saint-Germain very soon.

The 31-year-old is keen to leave the Ligue 1 giants, and fancies a move to the Premier League. Of course, that is where Newcastle are, and PIF have deep enough pockets to fund a move.

However, that does not necessarily mean it would be a good idea. Eddie Howe has already played down suggestions of a deal, while Gary Neville believes it could turn Newcastle into a circus.

Jose Enrique agrees, and is against the Magpies trying to sign the most expensive player on the planet.

Signing Neymar would be a ‘massive mistake’ by Newcastle

The former Toon defender has taken to Twitter to give his reaction to rumours of Newcastle trying to sign Neymar this summer.

He wrote: “I love Neymar but is no for Newcastle and the way they are playing football under Eddie. It will be a massive mistake from Newcastle to sign Neymar.”

Neymar to Newcastle is not happening

The rumours are going to continue until Neymar’s future is resolved. It is inevitable, as we are one of few clubs who have owners so rich that they can afford the South American megastar.

While he is a world class player who could transcend the team on and off the pitch, that does not mean it would be a good idea to sign him.

From a financial perspective, it would not make sense. Finishing in the top four will give Newcastle more wiggle room with regards to financial fair play, but there is no way they are going to use it all to bring Neymar to St James’ Park.

And from a football perspective, he is not the right character to add to Howe’s band of brothers. There is always a soap opera with Neymar, which is something Howe has done brilliantly to avoid since becoming Newcastle manager.

He is an exceptional player, but would not be a good fit. As Enrique says, it would be a ‘massive mistake’, but it is unlikely to be one that Newcastle will make.
