Gary Neville has admitted that Newcastle United signing Neymar would scare him to death.

Speaking on the Gary Neville podcast, the Sky pundit was explaining why he felt that Neymar is exactly what Newcastle don’t need right now.

Recent reports have suggested that Eddie Howe’s side could make a move for the PSG man.

PIF are apparently the driving force behind the potential signing, as they look to add a superstar to Newcastle’s ranks.

But Neville feels that the Magpies simply must avoid the temptation, as he would disrupt what is a perfectly balanced squad.

“That would scare me to death, that sort of signing,” he admitted. “Neymar is a sensational player but Eddie Howe would have a sort of circus. Eddie Howe doesn’t need a circus up here.

“You think about what Newcastle are at this moment in time, they’re building, they have foundations. What you don’t want to do is disrupt that, the fans are right behind the team.

There’s a spirit building, the atmosphere was electric in the first 10 minutes.

“They are going to need to do it at some point and go for the big name signings and be brave at a point and say let’s do it.

“But if they are a 25 or 26 year-old for £100 million that sort of player is likely to go somewhere else in Europe at this moment in time so you might end up getting offered a 32-year-old and Eddie might think, well no, Eddie and Dan Ashworth are going to have to be strong with the ownership.”

Neymar to Newcastle?

Neville’s analysis feels about right here, despite the excitement of a strong link to Neymar.

It is great to see Newcastle actually being talked about as a potential destination for one of football’s biggest stars.

However, Howe would have to blow the wage budget to bring the Brazilian to St. James’ Park and there would also surely be question marks over his work-rate.

This Newcastle side have out ran and out fought so many teams this season, and serious doubts have to be raised over whether Neymar has the credentials to fit in.

Of course, he could increase the quality of this squad on the ball and improve the service to the front-line.

But this particular Brazilian just doesn’t feel like the best fit for one of the most hard-working squads in the Premier League. And if Newcastle want to bring in a superstar this summer, they may be better off looking elsewhere.
