Jose Enrique gives his verdict on Newcastle trying to sign Anthony Gordon

Former Newcastle United defender Jose Enrique thinks Everton will be making a ‘massive mistake’ if they let Anthony Gordon join the Magpies.

Eddie Howe is currently trying to bring the 21-year-old to St James’ Park, and he is apparently interested in a move to Tyneside.

The Telegraph have reported that Newcastle are confident they can sign the winger this month, after failing to secure his signature during the summer transfer window.

But Gordon is back on the Magpies’ radar, and now looks close to joining Howe’s Champions League chasing Mags.

The only stumbling block appears to be the price. Newcastle want Gordon and he is keen on a move, with personal terms not likely to be an issue. But the Telegraph state that Toon officials will walk away from a deal if Everton do not lower their £60million asking price.

That is how much Chelsea were prepared to pay during the summer, but Newcastle are not willing to do the same.

However, with the Blues seemingly not interested on this occasion and Gordon keen to leave, Everton may be wise to cash in now given the amount of chaos that is already going on at Goodison Park. They don’t want to make it worse by forcing a player to stay when he wants out.

The Toffees can then use whatever money they get to bring in new recruits as they bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Jose Enrique thinks Anthony Gordon could be ‘outstanding’ for Newcastle

In contrast, former Toon left-back Jose Enrique thinks it would be a risk by Everton to let go of one of their star players.

The Spaniard has written on Twitter: “It will be a massive mistake for Everton to let him to now but I really hope Newcastle sign him because he will be outstanding player for Newcastle.”

Enrique thinks Gordon will be ‘outstanding’ if he joins Newcastle, and the Toon hierarchy clearly agree. Sporting Director Dan Ashworth is reportedly a big fan of the winger, while the club believe that he could thrive under the guidance of Howe.

Gordon has the raw skills to be a huge success at St James’ Park, despite struggling in an Everton shirt this season. He might not be popular among Toon fans right now, but a few impressive performances will change public perception.

For Everton, they are taking a big risk if they decide to sell the local lad. Whether it would be a mistake remains to be seen. Enrique thinks it would be, but that will largely depend on how they spend whatever cash they get for him.
