‘Interesting’… Pundit says 25-year-old Arsenal player could be a good solution for Newcastle’s problem

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale can ‘put himself back in the shop window’ with a January loan move to Newcastle United.

That is the view of former Premier League stopper Mark Schwarzer, who has written about the future of Aaron Ramsdale at Arsenal for Optus Sport.

The 25-year-old has been demoted at the Emirates this season, now acting as deputy to David Raya as Arsenal go in search of the Premier League title.

Ramsdale is being forced to watch on from the bench, leading to speculation that he could leave the Gunners in 2024. And with the transfer window open right now, there is an opportunity for him to go get first-team football somewhere else.

One possible destination is St James’ Park, with Newcastle United linked with a move for the England international.

This is largely because of the shoulder injury that Nick Pope suffered, which has led to rumours that a new goalkeeper could arrive on Tyneside.

And Schwarzer believes that a short-term move to the North East could be really good for Ramsdale’s career.

Mark Schwarzer encourages Aaron Ramsdale to join Newcastle on loan

In an article for Optus Sports, Schwarzer wrote about the possibility of Ramsdale leaving Arsenal and signing for Newcastle on loan this month.

“Newcastle United is an interesting one,” he wrote.

“They need a new goalkeeper but only in the short-to-medium-term, or as long as Nick Pope is out for.

“I’m a big fan of Pope, he’s a very good goalkeeper and he’s done very well at St James’ Park, so it would only be a short-term solution for Ramsdale but still a good opportunity to be number one at a top Premier League team and a loan until the end of the season would allow him to put himself back in the shop window for other clubs in the summer.”

No chance of Arsenal loaning him to Newcastle

With Pope out injured, there is an opening at Newcastle for a goalkeeper like Ramsdale. However, it is impossible to envision him merely coming in for half a season.

That will not suit the Magpies, who are always trying to think long-term with their signings.

It feels more likely that Newcastle will stick with Martin Dubravka, even if he has struggled to get close to Pope’s level.

While a move to St James’ Park might be good for Ramsdale in the eyes of Schwarzer, it isn’t going to happen.
