If Newcastle United want to sign Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest this summer, they will need to make him one of the club’s most expensive signings ever.
Johnson was linked with a move to St James’ Park last year before Forest achieved promotion, and his performances in the Premier League have proven that he can perform at the highest level.
That is why Newcastle continue to follow the 22-year-old. It was reported back in March that the Magpies ‘like’ Johnson, while a report in May suggested that he could be a summer target for Eddie Howe.
Forest avoiding relegation to the Championship means they might not need to sell their star man, and it looks like it is going to result in Steve Cooper’s side demanding huge money to sell their top scorer.
Nottingham Forest want £40m for Brennan Johnson
According to the Daily Mail, Forest want at least £40million for Johnson this summer. The report adds that West Ham and Everton are both interested in signing him ahead of next season.

It is easy to see why. Both the Hammers and the Toffees struggled in the Premier League, with Sean Dyche’s side surviving on the final day of the season after beating Bournemouth. As for West Ham, they were also involved in the relegation battle, but were able to book their place in next season’s Premier League before the last game of the campaign.
Johnson would be an excellent addition for both of those sides. He really excelled in his first season in the top flight, scoring eight Premier League goals. He was huge in ensuring Forest avoided relegation to the Championship.
The forward, who has been described as ‘quality‘ by Micah Richards, is a really exciting young player, and someone who Eddie Howe could do wonders with. Newcastle are on the lookout for a new right winger, while Johnson is also capable of playing through the middle. That versatility would really appeal to the Toon manager.
A move to Newcastle would surely tempt Johnson – especially with Champions League football on the horizon. That could give us an edge over West Ham and Everton.
However, Newcastle appear to be looking at plenty of players in a similar position, and it remains unclear how highly Johnson ranks on the Magpies’ list of summer targets.
