Newcastle United are expected to hold talks with Nottingham Forest wonderkid Brennan Johnson.
That’s according to the Independent, who state the Magpies are one of multiple clubs chasing the talented youngster. They add that Brentford, Everton, Leicester and Villarreal are also keen.
Johnson has been linked with Newcastle for a while, and was mentioned as a possible target going into the January transfer window. However, the Magpies prioritised other positions instead of signing a winger.
But the interest in Johnson has continued, with the Daily Mail stating last month that Newcastle had the 20-year-old on a list of potential midfield signings.
Eddie Howe’s side will face stiff competition to sign Johnson, who has reportedly already held talks with Brentford. The Independent’s report adds that conversations have already taken place with Everton, while other clubs such as Newcastle are expected to make a move.
Only promotion may keep Brennan Johnson at Nottingham Forest
As it stands, Johnson may still remain with Forest. The report states that he wants to take the step up to a higher level, but he could achieve that without a transfer.
Steve Cooper’s side are in with a shout of winning promotion to the Premier League. If they do go up, perhaps he’ll stay at the City Ground.
Johnson’s current contract runs until 2023, and the Independent report that he won’t extend his deal if they remain in the Championship. That may force them to cash in this summer, with a price tag ranging between £20million and £25million.
That’s a lot of money for someone who’s never played in the top flight. However, his potential proves he could be worth every penny.
And with Newcastle needing reinforcements out wide, Johnson could be a brilliant signing if we fend off interest from elsewhere.
