Significant Aston Villa development could play right into Eddie Howe’s hands at Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe could use the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) to his advantage this summer.

Indeed, Newcastle United had to sell players they did not want to leave before the start of the season due to almost falling foul of the PSR rules, which do not allow clubs to lose more than £105million over a three-year accounting period.

The Newcastle United manager saw Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh depart despite wanting to keep them at St James’ Park. Howe admitted he didn’t want Anderson or Minteh to leave Newcastle but financial rules dictated someone had to be sold.

Now, however, things could well be different. Howe has confirmed Newcastle are looking to use PSR to their advantage this summer, hinting at potential swoops on clubs who are potentially set to be in the position his side were in last summer.

All of that makes an update in regard to rivals Aston Villa particularly interesting.

Aston Villa ‘need to make major sale’ before June 30

The PSR accounting deadline comes on June 30.

According to The Daily Mail, Villa need to make at least one significant sale before then if they are to keep in line with the spending rules. With that in mind, Jacob Ramsey’s position looks interesting.

Newcastle are interested in Ramsey, whose potential sale would represent ‘pure profit’ on Villa’s balance sheet given he came through their academy.

A calculated move for the player this summer may be wise. Newcastle need reinforcement and, seemingly, Villa need to sell.

Unai Emery doesn’t want to sell Ramsey, though perhaps the need to raise funds could force Villa’s hand.

The 23-year-old has made only 24 starts this season, with competition for places tough at Villa Park.

Ramsey has scored four goals in the process, while providing seven assists. While generally deployed as a left-winger, the fact he’s right footed could go down well on Tyneside.

Jacob Murphy is a right winger playing on his natural side, rather than inverting. Newcastle have had huge success with that this season, so perhaps Ramsey could do something similar.
