Newcastle United may have Lewis Miley suddenly pulling the strings in midfield, but that does not mean the club’s search for a new midfielder is over.
With Sandro Tonali suspended and Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff out injured, Eddie Howe has been forced to turn to 17-year-old Lewis Miley in recent weeks.
The teenager has been exceptional, producing performances that you would never expect from someone so young.
Supporters are really enjoying Miley’s emergence, and he is someone who Toon fans will be watching in black and white for a long time. He is very much the future of the Newcastle United midfield.
However, he might soon have more competition. It is hoped that Willock and Longstaff won’t be out long-term, while the club are continuing to be linked with signing a new midfielder in January.
Kalvin Phillips appears to be the Magpies’ number one target, and the Telegraph have now provided an update on his future from Manchester City’s point of view.

Manchester City not totally against Kalvin Phillips joining Newcastle
According to the Telegraph, Newcastle are still going to prioritise signing a midfielder to replace Sandro Tonali when the January transfer window opens.
They add that Phillips is a player who the club have discussed a lot in recruitment meetings, while they state that Manchester City would not be completely against sending the 27-year-old to St James’ Park.
That feels like it is the only major stumbling block. Newcastle want Phillips, while it has been reported that Phillips is interested in signing for Newcastle. But it would mean Man City strengthening a direct rival, which they might not be too keen on.
However, this update from the Telegraph suggests that they would at least be open to the possibility of him joining Newcastle, which is certainly positive as the January transfer window looms large.
Even with Miley’s emergence, Newcastle do need reinforcements – especially if we remain in Europe in 2024, which will happen if we avoid defeat against AC Milan in our final Champions League group game on December 13th.
