Newcastle United could shockingly sell Yankuba Minteh this summer.
The Magpies are suddenly under pressure to move someone on due to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, and that honour could go to Yankuba Minteh.
The 19-year-old is yet to make his Newcastle United debut, having joined the club last summer for around £6million.
He was immediately loaned out to Feyenoord, where he excelled. Minteh enjoyed a brilliant year in Rotterdam, so much so that a lot of Toon fans want to see him get a chance at St James’ Park next season.
Newcastle could now sell Yankuba Minteh
Minteh is due to be involved in Eddie Howe’s pre-season preparations, but a worrying report about his future has emerged. It was recently claimed by the Telegraph that Newcastle are considering cashing in on the teenager.
Despite believing he could become a top player, Newcastle are reportedly reluctantly willing to sell the youngster for a fee of around £40million.
That would represent a huge profit in just 12 months, with Liverpool named as one of the clubs that could make a move for Minteh.
How Liverpool feel about reuniting Minteh with Arne Slot
That is likely because of their new manager, Arne Slot. He has been chosen to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, having left Feyenoord to become the Liverpool boss.
He knows Minteh very well, having worked with him last season at Feyenoord. Slot seemed to get the best out of the Gambia international, and a reunion in Merseyside would make sense.
However, that is not on the cards, according to the Liverpool Echo.
They report that while Slot does admire Minteh, Liverpool are not interested in signing him from Newcastle United this summer.
Newcastle must keep Minteh at St James’ Park
It would be a crazy decision to sell Minteh this summer. If someone is willing to pay £40million for him then maybe Newcastle need to take a step back and realise what they have got.
The Magpies are currently in the market for a new right winger, and Minteh could eventually be the solution to their problem. Even if it is not next season, there will come a time when Minteh is ready to have a serious impact in the Premier League.
Cashing in on him would be very short-sighted, although it does sum up how ridiculous the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules are. Clubs should be encouraged to give youngsters a chance, yet here Newcastle are considering selling one of their brightest talents to appease PSR.
If Newcastle need to raise money, there has to be another way. Selling Minteh would be massively disappointing, and it could be something that Toon officials eventually live to regret.
The only justification for selling could be if Newcastle already believe he is not going to fit in at St James’ Park. If that is the case then selling now makes sense given how high his stock is.
However, Minteh does feel like a player who Newcastle United absolutely must keep.
