Newcastle United have tried to sign a centre-back during the January transfer window, despite their PSR concerns.

Paul Mitchell has attempted to add a right-sided centre-back to Eddie Howe’s squad, as Newcastle United continue to search for Fabian Schar’s long-term successor after missing out on Marc Guehi in the summer.

Newcastle came close to signing Abdukodir Khusanov, only for the Uzbekistan international to join Manchester City.

In fact, the Magpies have missed out on multiple defenders to the Premier League champions. Newcastle did groundwork on Vitor Reis, while Toon officials were furious about missing out on Juma Bah.

Now Eddie Howe is set to miss out on another centre-back target, but this has nothing to do with Manchester City.

According to TalkSPORT, Fikayo Tomori is now unlikely to leave AC Milan and return to the Premier League during the January transfer window.

They report that the 27-year-old is happy to stay at AC Milan, having gone back to being a regular starter since Sergio Conceicao replaced Paulo Fonseca at the San Siro.

Why Fikayo Tomori to Newcastle United never felt likely

Heading into the January transfer window, it was reported that Newcastle were looking at Tomori.

The centre-back seemed a sensible target, as he eyed a return to England. It was claimed that Tomori wanted to return to the Premier League, but that stance has now changed.

His situation in Italy is now different, resulting in him opting to stay where he is.

That is a blow for Newcastle, as he is another centre-back target that will not be arriving at St James’ Park.

However, a move never felt likely in the first place. While Tomori is only 27-years-old, he is probably a little older than the Magpies would like. They are primarily focussing on players who are under the age of 25, as they strive for true value in the transfer market. That is summed up by their attempts to sign Khusanov, Reis and Bah.

But they are not joining Newcastle United, and neither is Tomori.
