Newcastle United are set to sign Nick Woltemade in a huge relief for Eddie Howe.

All summer, the club have tried to sign at least one striker but have been met with frustration at every turn.

Joao Pedro and Liam Delap went to Chelsea. Hugo Ekitike joined Liverpool and Benjamin Sesko chose to go to Manchester United.

It was all looking rather miserable for Newcastle until news on Woltemade broke.

Indeed, Newcastle have agreed a club-record deal to sign Woltemade from Stuttgart. The striker, who scored 12 goals in 17 Bundesliga starts last season, is now headed to Tyneside for a medical.

After a bruising summer for the club, the signing of at least one striker is a major boost. Hopefully, another follows and lets Newcastle end the Alexander Isak saga for once and for all.

For now, however, Woltemade is the story and Howe is excited.

Eddie Howe excited by Nick Woltemade transfer

According to iNews, Howe is excited about the prospect of working with the 23-year-old.

While there is an acceptance that Woltemade is still a work in progress, the Newcastle United manager is enthusiastic about the prospect of linking up with the former Werder Bremen youngster.

It’s also worth remembering the work Howe has done with Isak. The Sweden star is now considered amongst the best forwards in the world but certainly wasn’t when he joined Newcastle.

Indeed, in Isak’s final season at Real Sociedad, he scored only six goals in 32 La Liga appearances.

When Nick Woltemade could make his Newcastle United debut

Howe may not be able to call upon Newcastle’s potential new record signing in time for the Leeds clash on Saturday.

Having Woltemade in the squad for the trip to Elland Road would be very helpful, given Anthony Gordon’s three-match suspension following his red card against Liverpool.

According to Craig Hope on social media platform X, Newcastle are in a race against time to get the deal done to allow him to be involved against Leeds.

As per Premier League rules, Woltemade would need to be registered by 12pm BST on Friday to play against Leeds on Saturday.
