Newcastle United target James Trafford is going to be a Premier League goalkeeper again next season.

Burnley secured promotion back to the Premier League on Monday, beating Sheffield United 2-1 at Turf Moor to guarantee an immediate return to the top flight.

The Clarets will be playing against Newcastle United next season, with Scott Parker winning promotion to the Premier League for the third time in his managerial career. He has done it with Fulham and Bournemouth, and now he can add Burnley to that list.

James Trafford celebrates Burnley’s promotion

It is the first promotion of James Trafford’s career, as he caps off a remarkably good campaign with a return to the top tier of English football.

The 22-year-old has been exceptional, keeping 28 clean sheets in 43 matches and conceding just 15 goals.

Ahead of their promotion-decider against Sheffield United, Trafford described himself as ‘world class’. He was also praised by his manager, with Parker hailing Trafford’s maturity.

After securing promotion, Trafford took to his official Instagram account to deliver a message.

He posted three words, simply writing: “We did it.”

What promotion means for Newcastle United’s interest in James Trafford

Trafford recently said he would be a Premier League player next season, and that will be the case. However, it remains to be seen which club he will be representing.

After narrowly missing out on joining Newcastle United last summer, the goalkeeper has remained a man in demand. Manchester United want Trafford, while the Magpies’ interest has not gone away.

In fact, it was reported by the Daily Mail back in February that Newcastle expect to sign Trafford from Burnley.

Interestingly, the report stated that a move to Newcastle United was on the cards whether Burnley won promotion or not.

Unless the situation has changed in recent months, it does not appear that promotion will impact the shot-stopper’s future.

However, one thing it might do is increase Burnley’s asking price.
