He thought he’d become a policeman, now Newcastle United are expected to launch move within hours

Newcastle United are ready to make their move for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa this summer.

Wissa has become a leading Newcastle United transfer target once again after the club dropped their interest in Hugo Ekitike.

Wissa was linked with Newcastle earlier this summer and it’s believed the DR Congo international is again of interest.

The 28-year-old scored 19 Premier League goals last season, following up on his haul of 12 during the 2023/24 campaign.

While missing out on Ekitike has to be considered a blow, Wissa looks a logical addition.

Granted, there would be resale value if he were to join, but Newcastle have to be concerned about more immediate matters. They have a Champions League campaign for which to prepare, and will no doubt want to build on their Carabao Cup win next season.

In their pursuit of a new forward, Newcastle are expected to launch a move for Wissa soon.

Newcastle United to make Yoane Wissa move within 24 hours

According to BBC Sport, Newcastle will accelerate a move for Wissa in the coming 24 hours.

While interest from Tottenham and Nottingham Forest is said to be more advanced than Newcastle’s, decision-makers at St James’ Park will look to step things up imminently.

For his part, Wissa is understood to be open to the idea of a move to a club playing Champions League football.

Yoane Wissa thought he’d become a policeman before a footballer

Speaking to The Sun in March, Wissa admitted he never truly thought he’d become an elite-level footballer.

In fact, he believed he’d become a policeman.

“When I was growing up, I really just expected to be a random guy, maybe a policeman,” he said.

“Why not? But once I saw the small light that I could be here, I took it. I know it sounds crazy when I say that to people, but the truth is I’m not the most talented guy.”

Wissa started his senior career with French minnows Chateauroux in 2015 before joining Angers in 2016.

After loan spells from there to Laval and Ajaccio, he joined Lorient in 2018.

Brentford then signed him in 2021 upon their promotion to the Premier League. Wissa has since scored 45 goals in 137 Premier League games for the west London club.
