Harry Maguire shares stance on Manchester United future amid Newcastle interest

Harry Maguire faces a daunting summer with some key decisions to be made around his Manchester United future while Newcastle United will be watching on with interest.

The ‘world’s most expensive defender’ has found himself reduced to a bit-part role under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United this season. While not completely untrusted, Harry Maguire has found himself benched against Man United’s top six rivals this season suggesting that Ten Hag doesn’t fully have faith in the England centre-back.

Newcastle are reportedly interested in the 30-year-old stopper but his £190k-a-week wages will be a huge issue for the Magpies, but there’s a thought that Newcastle may propose a loan deal with Man United. However, The Athletic has said that people close to Maguire are adamant he wants to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place.

Harry Maguire has been like Jekyll and Hyde this season

Maguire is like Jekyll and Hyde with his good side often on display when he’s wearing an England shirt. Stuart Pearce has said that he’s ‘superb‘ for England, but he does seem to struggle to continue his international form into the Premier League. At least that’s been the story this season.

As The Athletic says, Maguire has two years left on his current deal with an option to extend it by a further year and Manchester United aren’t forcing him out. They do need to clear the wage bill and raise some funds to bring them back in line with Financial Fair Play, but there are other players ahead of Maguire in the queue for the exit door.

If he is to move, Maguire is going to have to drastically lower his expectations when it comes to wages as no club will be willing to offer him the wage he’s on at Man United right now.

A move to Newcastle could resurrect Maguire’s career

Newcastle certainly wouldn’t be willing to offer him what he’s currently getting at Man U with their tight wage restrictions.

As I’ve said before, there’s definitely a top defender in Harry Maguire. They always say form is temporary, class is permanent, so there’s a good chance that Maguire could get his second wind if he was to move away from Old Trafford.

Working alongside England teammate Kieran Trippier and under a brilliant man-manager like Eddie Howe could be exactly what Maguire needs to get his career back on track. I’m not ruling this one out.
