It looked like it was beginning to drag on, but now Newcastle United fans have received a positive update about the club’s interest in Harvey Barnes.
For more than a week it has looked like a deal would be likely, with Barnes even agreeing personal terms to join the Magpies.
But for all the confidence, a fee simply could be be agreed between Newcastle and Leicester.
That frustrated Toon fans, who have been keen to see the club follow up the arrival of Sandro Tonali with another exciting signing. Barnes would fall into that bracket, and the latest update from the Daily Mail states that things are heading in the right direction.
Newcastle ‘edging closer’ to Harvey Barnes deal
According to Daily Mail reporter Tom Collomosse, Newcastle are ‘edging closer’ towards signing Barnes from Leicester.
He states that the deal is ‘not there yet’, but that it could be finalised this week. Collomosse adds that the 25-year-old is going to cost between £35million and £40million.
It remains unclear whether that includes add-ons, but the good news is that a deal is getting closer to completion.
Collomosse’s Daily Mail colleague Craig Hope has also weighed in, stating that he’s been told that things are ‘moving in the right direction’.
That will delight Eddie Howe, who is keen for Barnes to join the club ahead of the pre-season trip to America. Newcastle’s first game in the USA is on Sunday night against Aston Villa.
Whether or not a deal will be done in time before the team departs for America remains to be seen, but it does sound like he will be able to link up with his new teammates over there if a deal progresses in the next few days.
It will be interesting to see what this development means for Allan Saint-Maximin. He has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park, and it has been claimed that his departure could fund the Barnes deal.
