Newcastle United are facing up to the reality of having to sell one of their best players this summer.
That is all anyone has talked about since Darren Eales spoke to the media earlier this month, with fans now worried about someone like Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak being sold due to profit and sustainability rules.
There has also been talk of Kieran Trippier or Callum Wilson leaving as early as this month, which has sparked huge debate among supporters.
And it was meant to be a quiet weekend with Eddie Howe‘s team not in action…
Instead, there is so much negativity surrounding Newcastle United, and particularly what they can and can’t do in the transfer market.
Ideally, the Magpies need to sell before they buy, and that is exactly what the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards thinks is going to happen when the 2023/24 season comes to an end.
Newcastle to sell someone big at the end of the season
Journalist Luke Edwards has been speaking about Newcastle on the latest episode of the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast. He is adamant that the club will sell someone ‘big’ this summer, and he predicts that it will be Bruno Guimaraes.
“Newcastle are going to sell someone big in the summer,” he said.
“They are. I’m going to put that out there. It is a shame but they’re going to have to do it.
“Bruno has got a release clause in his contract. He would be the one that I would think will go in the summer if I’m honest.
“There’s now doubts about Joelinton not signing a new contract. Would Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier also be for sale in the summer? Probably, because of their age profile.
“Newcastle have now got this problem where they’ve got this excellent team and because of PSR they’re going to lose some of their best players. If not in January then they are definitely in the summer and that’s going to be a big summer rebuild.”

Losing Bruno Guimaraes would be a disaster
There will be heartbreak if Bruno Guimaraes leaves the club in the summer. He is our best and most influential player, and he would be incredibly difficult to replace.
But the 26-year-old will be a man in demand due to his release clause, while not qualifying for the Champions League again could hinder our hopes of keeping him at St James’ Park.
Edwards is adamant that someone big has to go, and there is no one bigger than Bruno. It hopefully won’t come to that, but fans are rightly worried.
We have become victims of our success. The club needs more investment to kick on, but profit and sustainability rules mean that we need to sell to buy. And that means that a newer arrival may have to leave, as the players who were originally at Newcastle when Eddie Howe became manager just aren’t worth as much.
That is why Bruno could go, and why the Premier League’s rules are just ridiculous.
